The first in what will hopefully be a long line of popular psychology articles written by me. Specifically I hope to write more articles on the placebo effect. I authored and illustrated this piece (though the editor looked at many drafts and did have a big effect on the end product. The title was a product of the help of same benevolent editor- she has a penchant for literary references- :( the grammatical mistake "effect" rather than "affect" in the title is disappointing however).
